Athletic Trainers of the Year for 2010.

Due to extraordinary actions by two sets of athletic trainers, the CCCATA has taken the unprecedented step of honoring 4 athletic trainers as Athletic Trainer of the Year.  They will all be honored at the COA/CCCAA Spring Convention on April 1st in Ontario California.  Congratulations to all four of our award.

Brian Powelson from Contra Costa College and Annie Martin from Los Medanos saved the life of a Contra Costa football player who had sustained C2-C3 comminuted fractures and was unresponsive and not breathing.  Annie and Brian were able to stabilize the player and his cervical spine, while also performing rescue breathing to keep the athlete alive until paramedics were able to respond and transport him to the hospital. He is currently recuperating at a rehabilitation facility and is being weaned from his ventilator and is gaining motor function in his extremities.

Juan Cuevas and Lisa Nelson from Fullerton College attended to a baseball player who had collapsed unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse, due to a sudden cardiac arrest.  Lisa and Juan performed cpr and applied an AED, saving the athletes life.  After transport to the hospital, he underwent the implantation of an AED device.  He has since made a full recovery and is back to school and exercise.

We are looking for nominations for our California Community College Athletic Trainer of the year award. If you know an athletic trainer who is working at a California Community College who has gone above and beyond the call of duty please let us know who they are. Fill out the nomination form and send it to Michael Chisar. Nominations are accepted all year with the award presented at the COA meeting in the spring.
